The Gumby watch to be sold by Sotheby’s as a feature of the “Dear Keith: Works from the Personal Collection of Keith Haring” sale.

In the mid 1980s, American craftsmen Andy Warhol and Keith Haring had become dear companions. The two craftsmen got known for their commitments to American pop craftsmanship. Warhol investigated the mannerisms of promoting and the religion of VIP, and Haring’s spray painting esque work, conceived from the roads of New York City, had an impact in bringing issues to light around AIDS, the condition which Haring in the end surrendered to.

In an issue of Rolling Stone from August of ’89, Haring reviewed the beginning of their companionship: “I met [Warhol] at last through [photographer] Christopher Makos, who carried me to the Factory. From the outset, Andy was extremely inaccessible. It was hard for him to be comfortable with individuals in the event that he didn’t have any acquaintance with them. At that point he went to one more presentation at the Fun Gallery, which was not long after the show at Shafrazi. He was all the more amicable. We began talking, going out. We exchanged a ton of works at that time.”

They likewise traded blessings, and this Gumby watch was one of them. Harrison Tenzer, Head of Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Online Sales in New York, dates the gifting to the mid-to-late ’80s, saying, “We realize that this would have been skilled between 1985 when the watches were brought to advertise by the Prema Toy Company, and Warhol’s demise in February, 1987.”

Warhol marked the watch prior to gifting it, and Haring outlined it. Warhol was a watch authority himself, possessing various Pateks just as watches beautified with animation characters . For a man like Warhol, a watch is something beyond a watch, and Tenzer has a thought regarding how it affected Warhol and Haring: “Both Warhol and Haring were captivated by the emblematic force that animation figures, for example, Mickey Mouse had in the American Psyche – Haring made a figure called ‘Andy Mouse’ that portrays Andy Warhol as Mickey, and Warhol made an arrangement portraying kids’ toys in 1983. While not as emblematically powerful as Mickey Mouse, Gumby had been a compelling TV and toy presence since the last part of the 1950s and would have captivated the two specialists. It is telling that Haring outlined the watch, cherishing it as a work of compelling artwork that hung in his home.”

And without further ado, this Gumby watch that is come to represent a significant companionship may hang in a fortunate gatherer’s home – be it of craftsmanship or watches.

The watch conveys a gauge of $800-$1,200 and will be live on the parcel review page, which can be viewed here , soon.
